“Mosaic” comes from the latin word "musivum," meaning Muse. Mosaics are one of the oldest forms of decorative art. Mosaics are traditionally made with pieces of ceramic tile which have been cut or broken to form “tesserae,” but they can be made out of almost anything.

The style of combining vintage china within a single application is known as "pique assiette", of French origin, which translates to ‘broken’ or ‘stolen dish.’
